Welcome to The Deep End! We are Claire Harmer, Katharine Mears, Felicity Pearce, Paula Pitkethly and Sandra Young, a group of friends and translators who met during our Masters at the University of Westminster. Our source languages are French, Spanish, Portuguese, German and Catalan, and we have a broad range of specialisms, including: education, international development, EU, business, finance, technical, legal, medical and pharmaceutical translations.
Equipped with a Masters in translation and several years of work and life experience, we embarked on our freelance careers. We continued to run into each other at CPD events and enjoyed having the opportunity to share experiences and good practice, so we started meeting up regularly. In October 2013, two years after graduating, we had our first ‘proper’ meeting in central London. We have been meeting up regularly ever since, and have even started working to an agenda as we have had so much to share with each other on topics such as co-working spaces, translation software, how to increase productivity and upcoming CPD events, amongst others.
And so The Deep End was born – named after our former University café. This name was particularly fitting as we wanted our blog name to reflect the idea of jumping in to the world of freelance translation (i.e. ‘the deep end’!). Through our blog, we hope to extend our reach to other like-minded professionals and generate discussion and feedback. We hope you like it!
